Even though stores are already putting out school supplies (*gasp*), summer is not over yet! If you feel the need to get out of town one more time before fall arrives, here are a few inexpensive vacation ideas for families on a budget:

Airbnb

If you haven’t tried out Airbnb yet, you should probably check it out. Ditch the hotel altogether and save a few bucks by renting out homes and rooms from locals. If you can find a place with a kitchen, you can save money on food by making your own meals, instead of going out to eat all the time. Another benefit of booking through Airbnb? Hosts are great resources. They often know the best places to go see and how to get good deals.

Groupon

Whether you’re looking for a cheap hotel nearby or an inexpensive adventure across the sea, Groupon has you covered. They offer a variety of deals that range from $39/night hotel rates in Orlando to $639 all-inclusive trips to Cancun. Before you book your trip, make sure to check the fine details and reviews. Sometimes hotels will offer super low rates, but then they’ll nickel-and-dime you with additional fees. Overall though, using a Groupon is a great way to save money on a vacation. Check out their website for more information.

Staycations

If you don’t have the extra cash to travel, you can still have an awesome vacation at home. Staycations are a great way to enjoy the attractions, food and activities in your city that you usually don’t have time for. If you’re not sure where to start, check out Trip Advisor for reviews on the best things to do near you. Searching through Facebook events is also a great way to find free activities in your area (like outdoor movie nights and concerts).

Camping

If you already have the equipment, or you can borrow it from family or friends, you can save a lot of money by camping. National Parks are excellent vacation destinations. Entrance fees to typically range anywhere from $6-30/vehicle or $3-12/person. Or, if you don’t mind the crowds, you can go on one of their free entrance days (including August 25th and September 30th).

Weekend Getaways

Running out of vacation days? How about a quick weekend getaway instead? Sometimes all you need to do is get out of town for a couple of days to feel refreshed. Consider booking a hotel in a nearby city and spend a relaxing weekend hanging out with your family. Let sites like Kayak, Expedia and Hotels.com do all the work for you. They make it simple to find and book hotel rooms at the best rates.
